Clock Cards & Time Cards

Usually rectangular pieces of cardboard, clock cards or time cards have the days of the week and the hours of the day pre-printed across them. These clock card elements are sectioned off with ruled lines and are designed to hold all the clocked-in and clocked-out times that an employer needs recorded.

Clock cards & time cards are usually used with mechanised time clock recorders. Time recorders are most commonly made up of a time clock with a clock card input slot. When a user inserts a clock card in the slot, the machine prints clocking-in and clocking-out times on designated areas on the clock card.

Typically a workers would have a personalised clock cards, so the company that they work for could easily work out what to pay them, by adding up the hours worked on the individuals' clock cards.

Clock Card History

Businesses today usually have time recorders and clock cards in place to easily track employee clocking-in and out times. But during the 1900's companies relied upon handwritten logs.

That all changed when in 1888, the first time keeping machine was invented by a man called Daniel M Cooper. His machine revolutionised the way workers' hours were recorded by using clock cards. His time keeping machine; or The Rochester Recorder, as he called it was the first of its kind that was able to print clocking-in & out times in assigned areas on clock cards.

To get their clocking-in and clocking-out times on their card, workers would insert their clock card into The Rochester Recorder and pull a lever to trigger the printing mechanism.

It wasn't long before other inventors created similar time recorder devices to rival The Rochester Time Recorder. And in 1911 several of them merged to form what we know of today as IBM. This grouping together allowed the technology used in time recorders to evolve much faster. This saw advances such as 2 colours of ink to highlight lateness, more accurate minute by minute times for registration and the ability to make smaller time recorder machines. The actual process of transferring a printed times onto a clock cards hasn't changed greatly over the years.
